San Francisco Tango Festivals

APRIL. Argentine Tango USA Festival and Championship. ARGENTINE TANGO USA is an organization run by Andrea Monti and a group of dedicated social dancers who are committed to celebrating Argentine culture in the USA. This event includes four days of dancing, tango workshops, guest instructors, live music and most importantly, a Tango competition to decide the USA Tango champions in both Salon and Stage categories. The festival is held annually at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel.

JUNE-JULY. Nora’s Tango Weekend. It’s one of the longest running and most well-known Tango festivals in the United States. Nora invites world class tango masters from Argentina and presents an inspirational program for tango enthusiasts of all levels. Each night of the festival has a different theme for dressing up. The festival is held at the San Francisco Airport Marriott.

NOVEMBER. SF Tango Marathon. SF Tango Marathon is three blissful days of non-stop tango in beautiful San Francisco. This event is very well organized by Ayano Yoneda and Felipe Martinez and a great group of volunteers. The SF Tango Marathon attracts some of the best dancers from all over the US and abroad.

Ramilonga at Balancoire

This is the newest milonga in San Francisco, located in the Mission district with a great vibe. Dance floor is on the larger side and the full bar is a great place to hang out. It could quite possibly be called the “New El V”, but friendlier.

Tuesday Night Tango in Palo Alto
First Baptist Church (Fellowship Hall) 305 North California Ave at Bryant, Palo Alto, CA
Milonga/Practica from 9 – 11pm with various DJs playing a mix of classical and alternative music. Leslie Gordon teaches a class before hand, with a new progressive series starting every month. A great place to learn and practice the fundamentals for Tango, plus everyone learns to lead and follow.

Switch Tango Tuesdays

All are welcome at this FREE class and practilonga. Learn how to lead and follow in a gender neutral environment. During the practilonga, partners change each 2-song set. Music ranges from classic Tango to current music. Shoes you can pivot in are recommended. Great for beginners and fusion dancers. No partner necessary and beginners welcome.

CELLspace at SOMArts Cultural Center

CELLspace is organized by Project Tango a volunteer-run organization. Their mission is “To promote tango as a social dance and evolving art form in our world culture while building and maintaining individual and community integrity, balance and respect.” The music is 50/50 with rotating traditional and alternative sets. This is a great place for beginners as its atmosphere is more relaxed compared to many other venues. The beginner and intermediate classes before the milonga are a great deal at only $10 and are taught by various local instructors.
Beginner and Intermediate classes at 8:10pm, milonga 9:10 – midnight.

Milonga Corazon
Lotus Thai Restaurant, 4133 Piedmont Ave. at 41st Street, Oakland, CA
Held every Wednesday, this fun and friendly milonga is hosted by Ashvin. This event features a beautiful space and intimate ambience suitable for close embrace dancing. Located in a prime neighborhood with plenty of free and easy parking on the street as well as in a lot on 41st at Piedmont. Go early and have a delicious Thai dinner beforehand or somewhere nearby. Close to 580 and easy drive from SF.
9pm to Midnight.

Allegro Milonga
Allegro Ballroom, 5855 Christie Avenue, Emeryville, CA
This relaxed Thursday Milonga is hosted by Mat MaMoody and often hosts visiting instructors. DJ Emilio Flores plays a variety of traditional Argentine Tango music. After 11:15, be prepared for Nuevo, Alternative, and contemporary Tango’s such as late Pugliese with no tandas nor cortinas.

Milonga La Paz at War Memorial Veterans Building
Veterans Memorial Building / Herbst Theater - 401 Van Ness Ave Room 212, San Francisco, CA
Milonga La Paz is located in Room 212 of the beautiful Herbst Theater. It’s hosted by Ivan Schartz of the Golden Age Tango Academy 501c3 and is sponsored by the American Legion Post 315, Veterans for Peace and OneVet OneVoice.

The Next Practica at the Beat

The Beat is a dance studio in Berkeley offering a variety of dance classes. Homer and Cristina are teaching a “shoes optional” Gender Neutral
All-Level Skills Class 8:15-9:00, followed by a Supervised Alternative Music Practica till 11:00.
A very friendly and welcoming place for dancers of all levels to practice.

La Genesis Milonga
Genesis Dance, 404 Clement St. (@ 5th ave), San Francisco, CA
Genesis is a ballroom/dance studio located in the Inner Richmond and is the latest hot spot for Friday night Tango. The wood dance floor is excellent with lots of space for creative, elegant dancing. Table and chairs are placed around the dance floor and big cozy couches near the water and snacks table is a great place to relax and mingle. This neighborhood is packed with great cuisine (some open late), so make it a more worthwhile visit and plan to enjoy a nice meal before or after dancing.
Held every Friday
Tango Lesson (Intermediate to Advanced level) from 9-10pm and Milonga from 10pm to 1:30am.

Milonga Época in Oakland (every Saturday)
Lake Merritt Dance Center (Lakeview Hall 1 – Upstairs) - 200 Grand Ave, Oakland, CA
This elegant milonga is held in a beautiful space at the Lake Merritt Dance Center in downtown Oakland. There is a nice sized wood dance floor, easy parking in front of building with security, plus a good spread of snacks. There is a class before hand by rotating local and visiting instructors.
Milonga is from 9pm to 12:30AM. Held every Saturday.

Milonga El Abrazo (third Saturday of every month)
Danzhaus, 1275 Connecticut Street, San Francisco, CA
This is a very popular milonga in San Francisco hosted by the lovely and talented Mayumi. A variety of top visiting and local instructors teach and perform at this once a month milonga. It boast a sprung dance floor and a bar with non-alcoholic drinks. (Bring your own booze if you like). Couches line the dance floor and tables near the bar allow a variety of spaces for mingling and cabeceo.
Held third Saturday of every month

La Milonga de Nora (every 2nd Saturday of the month)
855 Christie Avenue, Allegro Ballroom, Emeryville, CA
The Allegro is a very large ballroom/dance studio with an excellent dance floor. Dancers of all levels feel welcome at this milonga.
Held every 2nd Saturday of the month.
Class is at 8pm, milonga 9 till 2pm.

Milonga Sentimental (every Saturday except the 4th)
Motion Arts Center, 217 South Claremont Street, San Mateo, CA
Gustavo and Jesica Hornos, professional teachers from Argentina and USA Tango Champions host La Milonga Sentimental every Saturday (except the 4th). A 1.5 hour workshop is taught by Gustavo and Jesica before the milonga. Gustavo is also an excellent DJ. The Motion Arts Center has state of the art sound equipment, inviting mood lighting and a beautiful and spacious dance floor.

All Nighter at the Beat (4th Saturday of the every month)

This event is one of the longest running North American all-nighters and attracts dancers from all over the bay area. It is held on the 4th Saturday of the every month, and is hosted by Homer & Cristina and Felipe & Ayano. There is a class before hand by rotating local instructors or guest teachers.
Class at 9:30, milonga starts at 10:30pm until dawn.

Bissap Baobab Practica with Glenn (classes & practica)
3372 19th Street, between Mission and Capp, San Francisco, CA
Located in the heart of the Mission, Glenn teaches great foundation classes here and the practica is usually quite popular. The space is cozy, but its a fun and friendly place to learn and practice. Family friendly, Queer friendly, all are welcome!

Studio Gracia
Levy Studio, 19 Heron Street, San Francisco, CA
Studio Gracia is a popular and friendly milonga on Sunday night hosted by Natasha Ng. There are cozy couches, an amazing spread of food and fantastic wood dance floor.
Two drop-in classes are offered: Beginner class with Natasha starts at 6:45 and intermediate class with guest instructors at 7:30pm.
Milonga is from 8:30pm to midnight.

Alberto’s Night Club

Alberto’s in Mountain View a large dance floor, a full bar and brings in a consistent good crowd. It’s located conveniently in downtown Mountain View with a variety of restaurants and cafe’s nearby. Alberto’s often hosts guest teachers and performers, occasional live music and rotating DJ’s.
