Sundays (Specialized Workshops spanning 6-weeks from July 14th - August 18th) 5:30-7:00pm Intro to Son (Open to Levels 2 & Up) Considered Cuba's first global choreographic export, Son originated in the eastern (Oriente) provinces of Cuba in the late 19th century and became Cuba's national rhythm and dance in the 1930's. Bringing together both West African, Hispanic and local creole musical characteristics, its derivatives and fusions, particularly Salsa, have spread across the world. This 6-week workshop will expose students to the fundamentals of Son Cubano, with considerable attention to musicality, coordination, and its structural application to Casino. Over the course of the workshop, students will become familiar with the defining characteristics of Son, including contra-tiempo (on 2) timing, clave and other key Cuban musical concepts - will be able to distinguish Son from other Cuban musical genres and will be able to execute its defining footwork & traveling patterns, paseos, caídas, tornillos, etc. Instructors: Nikki & Ryan 7:00-8:30pm Casino (Split Levels: Levels 1 & 2; Levels 3 &4) This 6-week workshop will focus on Casino partnering for dancers at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, with emphasis on connected and separated patterns, styling, body movement, and footwork. Students will also be shown how to fuse other Cuban traditional and popular dances into the proposed framework, all while dancing to rhythmically dense Timba (a-tiempo y contra-tiempo) as a means to combine intricate patterns with dynamic rhythmic variation.
