In Venezuela, a bululú is a buzzing party, a gathering that generates excitement. It only takes a minute listening to Bululú to understand why they’ve claimed the moniker as their own. Led by Venezuelan-born percussion master and vocalist Lali Mejia, the nine-piece combo draws on folkloric styles from Venezuelan, Colombian, Cuban and other Caribbean cultures. With Mexican-born string expert José Roberto Hernandez serving as music director, the ensemble delivers infectiously grooving and insistently celebratory performances. Reflecting the vibrant mix that makes up the Bay Area’s Latin music scene, Bululú features a stellar cast of highly seasoned players, including Puerto Rican-born, Dominican-raised vocalist Sofia Magdelena, Berkeley-based bassist and music director Ayla Davila, Salvadoran-American pianist Ruthie Dineen, Venezuelan percussionist/vocalist Omar Ledezma Jr., string expert Kai Lyons, trombonist Mara Fox, Chilean vocalist/percussionist Lichi Fuentes and Venezuelan vocalists Norma Kansau and Jose Gregorio Kansau.
