Salsa
Celebrate the closing of our Race, Myth, Art, and Justice exhibition with #AfroWaveSessions. This session honors the cultural and entrepreneurial impact Caribbean-Americans have made to Harlem and the world. The event features a Pan-Caribbean food showcase of Harlem based restaurants, a workshop led by Nuevayorkinos founder Djali Brown-Cepeda, a music experience curated by DJ Lauareno, the Grandson of Aida Perez, Founder of the Loíza Festival in El Barrio, and a live musical performance from Spanish Harlem Salsa led by El Barrio's very own trombonist, Willie Alvarez! #AfroWaveSessions is a monthly concert series showcasing the Black cultural evolution with vanguard artists of the Global African Diaspora. WHEN: Saturday, June 15, 2019 TIME: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM WHERE: Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute ADMISSION: Free W/ RSVP Meet Djali Brown-Cepeda A Native New Yorker, Djali is a filmmaker, creative, and Founder/Curator of Nuevayorkinos, a digital visual archive dedicated to the NYC Latinx experience. In 2016, she directed, produced, and hosted reign(a), an original web-series on womyn who challenge cookie-cutter definitions of feminism, for Mass Appeal. A health enthusiast, Djali is a certified yoga instructor and doula-trainee. A graduate of Eugene Lang College at the New School University, Djali is an advocate for social justice and founded SDA (Students Decolonizing Academia), a student organization challenging academia's eurocentricity bore from the ashes of SNCC, the Young Lords, and the Chicano Movement. She is currently signed to Wilhelmina Models. NUEVAYORKINOS Project: Founded and curated by Djali Alessandra Brown-Cepeda, a second-generation Dominican-American woman from Uptown, Nuevayorkinos is a visual digitized archive dedicated to the ÑYC Latinx experience. By documenting the stories of those who have come from Latin America and the Caribbean and made ÑYC their home, Nuevayorkinos seeks to act as an antidote to the harmful, singular media representations of Latinidad. As the political climate of the nation (and the globe) finds itself engulfed in a wave of xenophobia, telling our stories becomes all the more important. Further, as Latinxs—and POC as a whole—find themselves displaced due to rising rent in once-culturally-specific enclaves, Nuevayorkinos reminds the city—and the world—that Latinxs are an integral part of NYC's social fabric and, by proxy, the nation as a whole. Whether one has immigrated from Colombia, Haiti, DR, Mexico, Brasil, or the Dominican Republic, Nuevayorkinos is a large family photo album celebrating our personal and collective historias. This program is made possible with the generous support of the Andrew Mellon Foundation and additional support from The Ford Foundation, the Hearst Foundations, New York Women's Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Dept. of Cultural Affairs. *Your reservation does not guarantee admission to this event. There's a limited seating capacity and everyone will be seated on a first come first serve basis. More Info below.
