How Much Do Dance Classes Cost for Adults in the United States? News & Trends

For many decades now, dancing has proved to be one of the most popular pastimes on the face of the earth. Not only is dancing an expressive artform that allows you to let loose, unwind, and release your inhibitions, but it is also a fantastic way to keep fit and get some exercise. Did we forget anything? Ah, yes. Dancing also teaches you a new skill, and lets you have fun in the process.

Whether you’re an experienced dancer, proficient in a wide range of different styles, with years of experience behind you, or a complete novice looking to learn a new skill, dancing is as inclusive as it comes and is suitable for everyone. Because it’s so popular, finding dance classes in the United States is now easier than ever.

Unfortunately, because of the current economic climate, not all of us are blessed with heaps of disposable income. If you’re thinking of taking dance classes, you’ll likely want to know how much they will cost.

So, how much do dance classes cost for adults in the United States? Let’s take a look, shall we?

What are the Average Costs of Dance Classes for Adults in the United States?

Getting straight to the point, we’ll kick things off with a look at what the average costs of dance classes for adults in the United States actually are.

Remember, this is as broad as it is long and is only designed to give you a rough idea of how much it is likely going to cost you. Different studios and different instructors charge different rates, and prices can, and will, change regularly.

With that said, what sorts of prices can you expect if you want to take up various forms of dance across the States?

If you’re thinking of simply taking a single class now and then, prices typically range from $10 - $25. If you have a busy schedule, or are unsure if dance classes are for you, this could be useful to begin with, as that way you can decide whether the price is worth it.

If however, you’re looking for a more social experience, group dance classes may be more up your street. Here, depending upon the dance studio, prices generally range from $40 - $200 per month. For weekly dance classes, this works out at $10 - $50 per month. Most studios also offer block-booking packages. If you pay for the entire month for example, it will usually work out cheaper than paying weekly.

For those who are looking to seriously get into dancing, private lessons are ideal. They are, however, usually more expensive as they’re more involved. Instructors tend to charge between $50 and $120 per hour for one-on-one lessons. For more advanced instruction, prices can be between $145 and upwards of $200 per hour.

Again, buying lessons in bulk is a great way of keeping your costs low.

Factors Affecting the Cost of Dance Classes in the United States

As you can see from the above, the prices of dance classes and tuition vary hugely. There are a wide range of different factors which can affect the price of these classes, which we’ll explore in more detail below.

Instructor Experience

Instructor experience is a huge deciding factor when it comes down to the overall cost of dance classes.

For new and inexperienced tutors and instructors just starting out, fees are likely to be much lower than experienced, skilled, reputable, and qualified instructors with years of experience under their belts and plenty of satisfied customers in the process.

Location of the Dance Studio

The location of the dance studio can also influence how much your dance classes are going to cost you.

If you’re looking to take dance classes in New York for example, dance studios found in upmarket locations such as Manhattan are more likely to charge more than studios found in less-affluent areas.

Type of Dance

The type of dance you wish to learn will also likely have an impact on the price you pay per class/lesson.

More technical and complex dance movements such as ballet and certain styles of Ballroom for example, will likely cost more because they’re more hands on, technical, and harder to teach.

Dances with more of a freestyle and improvisational element to them, such as jazz, Hip Hop and street dance, are usually more affordable because they’re less technical and more expressive.

Private vs Group

Finally, one-on-one tuition often costs more than group classes. For personal tuition, you could pay anything from $50 – upwards of $200 per hour. Generally, $50 - $90 appears to be the norm.

Group classes, however, are far more affordable. Here, you’re looking at $10 - $50 per hour. The average currently stands at around $12 - $25 per hour.

Other Dance Class Prices to Consider

As well as the primary pricing factors when it comes to the cost of dance classes in the United States, there are also other fees and expenses you will need to take into consideration. These include:

  • Travel expenses
  • Fuel costs
  • Hidden fees/memberships/annual registration fees ETC
  • Clothing, footwear, water bottles, bags, other accessories
  • Available facilities (more advanced studios with more features and facilities tend to be more expensive)
  • Inflation, interest rates, other economic factors
