We are celebrating a MILESTONE birthday of Afrekete in 2022 and we'd love to share it with you! ! YES It's our 10th birthday in 2022 - so in little Coffs Harbour on Gumbayggirr country, on top a rock by the sea in sunny Sawtell, with my two incredible talented heart warrior brothers Adrian Medina Israel Ortiz, our collective dreaming birthed Afrekete Afro-Cuban Summer Dance Camp and it has further evolved to Afrekete Afro-Cuban Festival! The 1st Dedicated Afro-Cuban culture festival in Australia is going to make history once more with it's first 5-day festival in the beautiful Southern Gold Coast - TUGUN - only 3min from Gold Coast Airport. 26-30 January 2022 Starting with 'Cuba in Australia' Day on Wednesday 26th January with a collaborative community art project 'Journey of the Drum' - an evolution of our previous exhibitions to incorporate the spirituality of nature and connection to rhythms of many cultures in a mural at the Southern Beaches Community Gardens behind the Tugun Village Community Centre. Followed by Community Demonstrations and pre-party Thursday 27th January at the gorgeous rooftop bar The Salty Fox at Rydges Hotel Gold Coast Airport! Then our weekend extravanganza commences with our dinner showcase 'Night in Cuba' Friday 28th January, a whole weekend of workshops in the roots of Salsa with some extra special musical editions with uber special guests PLUS the Feria Cubana Market Day Sunday to end things off with some rhythmic drumming from the African Diaspora to other Central Latin American cultures influenced by African heritage!
