Seamlessly combining classical ballet with diverse cultural traditions, the San Francisco–based company reinvigorates dance in bold and breathtaking ways. This is revelatory ballet renowned for inspiring a deep sense of the connectedness of all life. The program for this special evening will include Alonzo King’s riveting new work Biophony, made in collaboration with natural-soundscape artist Bernie Krause and composer Richard Blackford. For more than 40 years, Krause has traveled the globe with microphones tuned to the earth and its creatures. His vast archive catalogues the collective sound of entire ecosystems—what Krause terms “biophony.” From the rainforests of Borneo to a water hole in Kenya, from the Alaskan tundra to a meadow high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, his recordings carry imprints of habitats in peril.
