La Banda Ramirez Latin jazz quintet plays a range of Latin music: from Cuban classics to New York salsa, modern Latin jazz to post-bop. Co-led by multi-percussionist Chacho Ramirez and flutist Carolyn Steinberg Ramirez, the band’slatest CD, “A Family Ting,” includes tunes from Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, Don Grolnick, and Dave Valentin, as well as originals by Chacho, from his “Metrotang” CD, in which West African rhythms intertwine with jazz and blues. Chacho toured twice playing congas with Ahmad Jamal, worked with Hal Galper, Neil Clarke, Hector Martignon, and recorded with Alex Blake. Carolyn holds a doctoral degree in music composition from The Juilliard School. Her classical chamber music works have been performed in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Russia. Her compositions arerecorded on the CD, “Songs, Dances, Duos.” She studied jazz improvisation with Richie Vitale and has developed her style while working with and adapting music for La Banda Ramirez. La Banda Ramirez features Jack Glottman on piano, a native of Bogotá, Colombia. He plays regularly at many of New York City’s top venues and has performed/toured with Christian McBride, Melissa Walker, Ron Blake, and Wes Anderson. Bassist Ratzo Harris’s illustrious career includes work with Kenny Werner, Cal Tjader, Mose Alison, and Jane Ira Bloom. Randy Sosa played timbales in two of Manny Duran’s bands, with La Herencia Latina orchestra, and with bassist Joe Falcón (Son Boricua Quintet). Together with Chacho and Carolyn, these histories combine in La Banda Ramirez, where individuality flourishes and re-combines, creating vibrant sounds of rhythm, melody, and color.
