ABOUT The Porto Commercial Atheneum, Association of Culture, Education and Recreation, was founded on August 29, 1869 and resulted from the merger of other similar non-vengeful institutions, founded by merchants and clerks of the city of Porto. A unique association in its kind, with the character of a private club, where there are recreational and cultural activities. Not disregarding its valuable artistic heritage in oil paintings, sculpture and faience, as well as numismatic and medalistic collections, its jewel of the crown is the Library, considered one of the best private libraries in the Iberian Peninsula. Its bibliographic collection is of great value, possessing a collection of more than 40,000 titles and 80,000 volumes, among many rarities, a first edition of The Lusadas, an edition of the Bible dating from 1500 and some writings of Ferno Lopes.
