This style was born in New York by the Black/Latino gay community in the late 70’s early 80’s. Vogue consist of three styles: • Old Way - characterized by poses that consist of the formation of lines, symmetry, and precision. • New Way - characterized by more rigid/geometric movements coupled with tutting and locking. • Vogue Femme/Dramatics - characterized by fluidity with exaggerated feminine movements consisting of 5 elements: hand performance, catwalk, duckwalk, floor performance, and dips & spins. In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of Vogue, body awareness and placement, muscle control, and performance. INSTRUCTOR BIO: Keelan Johnson is a performer and choreographer based in Seattle, Washington. He is also one of the co-directors and co-creator of Malicious Alure. He has been dancing for 12 years and is formally trained in the dance styles Vogue, Waacking, and Hip Hop. Keelan’s training includes working alongside some of Seattle’s most innovative choreographers such as Zsa Mae, Ron Gatsby, and Hannah Wintrode. He is an alumni member of the dance groups “Throne Level” ,“Luscious & Vicious” ,“The Purple Lemonade Collective” and currently a contributing choreographer and principle dancer for the art collectives and “The Z Project”. Keelan’s work has been showcased locally at the Bellevue Arts Museum’s Art Fair, Seattle International Dance Festival’s “Art on the Fly”, Seattle Gay Pride Festival, and Seattle Art Museum’s events “Legendary Children” and “Remix”. Keelan represents himself under the alias of “Android Allure” while competing in local Vogue and Dance battles and the winner of Seattle’s local Vogue competitions “EnVouge”, “After Black Friday Ball”, as well as Portland’s Vogue/Waacking competition “Nostalgia”. Keelan chose to study the dance styles vogue and waacking because It allowed him to embrace his femininity and masculinity as a gay male. Due to the rich culture associated with the styles, it was the first time he felt completely comfortable. Being a biracial and feminine gay man, he was able to identify with the struggle queer people of color faced when these styles weere being developed. Due to the high energy, tricks, and theatrics that are incorporated in Vogue and Waacking, Keelan has embraced the styles because of his passion for entertaining and performance. Keelan’s main goal as an instructor and educator is to push students out of their comfort zones while having fun and learning something new in the process. He strives to continue to educate the Seattle area on the history of Vogue and ballroom culture to cultivate Seattle’s own ballroom scene. More Info below.
