Some of the artists were born in another country. Some of the artists don’t really know their family history. Each adult artist will be sharing their story on how they and/or their family got to the U.S. and how it affects their identity today. Joelle Fernandez and Frankie Hebres, directors of I’M FROM, are both Filipino American. Incorporating their cultural dances into their everyday dance style has always inspired them. The big group pieces in the production will be influenced by popular Filipino folk dances, such as the Tinikling with clapping bamboo sticks and Maglalatik. There will be an open conversation with the artists immediately after each show. Why: - To further the conversation on immigration issues particularly in this time of U.S. history with the upcoming Presidential election - To inform our communities that the Twin Cities is home for many refugees/immigrants and to take action when it comes to social, political, racial, and economic justice - To give a platform for professional dancers to be seen AND heard - To give the artists an opportunity to research more about their immigration story and reflect upon their identities - To pay homage to where we come from How: Cultural Community Partnership Grant from The Minnesota State Arts Board Where: The Wellstone Center 179 Robie St. E St. Paul, MN 55107 Who: Andy Asong-Morfaw Joelle Fernandez Frankie Hebres Iman Siferllah Griffin Khadijah Siferllah Griffin Herbert Johnson Zack Nguyen Darnell Payne Jameson Pieper Jaime Ramberg Tierra Harrison Liza Ginzburg Vera Meszaros Iris Meszaros Bella Roberts Alana Rucker Izabella White-Mendez Micaela White-Mendez Madelyn Yang Free parking Ticket Price: $10 Buy at the door or online (website link coming soon) More Info below.
