Summer Schools: Adventures In Topology (Age 16–18)

In this workshop with Nikoleta Kalaydzhieva, students will explore the intriguing world of mathematical shapes, known as Topology. They will see how 3D shapes can have only one side and what interesting things you can find when you cut these shapes up. Students will also investigate ideas of orientation, what it means for two shapes to be connected, and even extend thinking out into the fourth dimension! Please note: Please note, this workshop is strictly for 16–18 year-olds and will include a 45 minute supervised lunch break. Students will not be able to leave the building at lunch time unless permission is given at the time of booking. Students should bring lunch and a drink, pens, pencils and a calculator. Mathematics Summer School workshops are based on Ri Masterclasses. Students who have attended a Masterclass series which included a session on a similar topic may have already seen some of the content in this workshop. Please contact us on [email protected] with any questions. Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions. About speaker: Nikoleta Kalaydzhieva is a PhD student in Maths at UCL, doing research in number theory. As well as giving masterclasses at the Ri, she is involved in lots of outreach activities at UCL. She is also an associate of the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) and part of the team behind Chalkdust magazine. In her spare time, Niki enjoys dancing bachata, kizomba and salsa!  More Info
