The Shabbat Table: August

Are you from Boyle Heights or the greater Los Angeles eastside and looking for Jewish community? You have a place at The Shabbat Table!Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles has a notoriously rich Jewish past. Though we also have a very small but unique Jewish cultural presence in the barrio today, a small circle of old-timers and newcomers. It is also home to many Jews of Color, as well as inter-racial and inter-faith families who celebrate their Jewish culture and faith. It is also a special meeting place between the diverse ethnic groups of the area, who celebrate each other’s culture as well.In these Shabbat Table events we will be honoring our community past, while sparking inspiration for our present and future; blending Eastern European Jewish and Mexican/Latino/Sephardic flavors, which are the heritage of our community. You are invited to join in our Erev Shabbat celebration with THE BOYLE HEIGHTS CHAVURAH on Friday, August 16, 2019, starting at 7:30pm. We will be doing candle lighting together, so please feel bring to bring your own Shabbat candles if you want to help us flood this sacred space with light! The liturgy will be lead in Hebrew, Spanish and English, lead by Shmuel Gonzales the Barrio Boychik, community organizer and founder of The Boyle Heights Chavurah. We will be having a traditional shabbat kiddush, followed by kosher meat meal, with also some vegetarian options available. In keeping with basic kashrut we will not be serving any dairy products at this event. This is so that people of all level of ritual observance can feel included in the meal, and break bread with us.
