Do you like barbecue? Do you like Tex-Mex? Then we have the event for you!
The Houston Barbecue Festival and Saint Arnold Brewing Company announce the inaugural Tex-Mex BBQ Block Party to celebrate the growing influence of Tejano and Tex-Mex cooking traditions in contemporary Central Texas-style craft barbecue.
Ticket holders will taste unlimited samples of each vendor's barbecue dish as well as enjoy great Saint Arnold beer.
Over the last ten years, Texas barbecue has been transformed by the "craft barbecue" movement which uses traditional smoking techniques and high-quality ingredients to produce barbecue that is unsurpassed in quality anywhere else in the world.
More recently, pitmasters with backgrounds in Tex-Mex and Tejano cooking have joined the craft barbecue movement and created a style of barbecue generally referred to as "Tex-Mex BBQ" that combines Mexican, Tejano, and Tex-Mex cooking traditions with Central Texas-style barbecue.
A classic dish of this style is the smoked brisket taco with a handmade flour tortilla, chunks of smoky Central Texas-style brisket and various toppings such as pickled onions, jalapenos, queso fresco and guacamole.
But the creative pitmasters of Tex-Mex BBQ don't stop there. Other examples of Tex-Mex BBQ dishes include crispy prime brisket chimichangas con queso, smoked brisket flautas topped with salsa roja and cotija cheese, and smoked pork shoulder pozole dressed with pickled radish, cilantro and lime.
Current participants are (subject to change): Eduardo Ortiz of Eddie O's Texas Barbecue, John & Veronica Avila of El Burro & the Bull, Joseph Quellar of JQ's Tex-Mex BBQ, Rick Muniz of Los Muertos BBQ, Dom Soliz of Mick Smokin BBQ, Jose Palomo of Palomo's Pit BBQ, Andrew Gonzalez & Melissa Munoz of Tejas Mexi-Q, Ray & Genesis Dominguez of Ray's Texas Smoke Barbecue, Robby & Bobby DelToro of Texas Toros Barbeque, Raymond Luna Jr of True Bark BBQ, and Willow Villarreal & Jasmine Barela of Willow's Texas BBQ, all from Houston; Esaul Ramos of 2M Smokehouse in San Antonio, and Tony Salazar of Taste of Texas Tex Mex BBQ in Beaumont.
