Do you salsa? Yes, you can, thanks to Buffalo native Calvin Rice and Fanny Olaya of Lima, Peru, founders of Baila Salsa Dance Company. They offer many opportunities to learn: group lessons are held Sundays for dancers with different levels of expertise and several varieties of Latin dance are offered. Every Wednesday is Noche de Salsa (Salsa Night), with beginner level lessons at 7 p.m., followed by social dancing until 10. Noche de Salsa is a fun, lively Wednesday night outing and a great way to meet peopleno need to bring a dance partner; everyone dances with each otherthen show off your newly acquired moves on the dance floor. They frequently attend salsa congresses and festivals where they participate in workshops and share the dance floor with some of the biggest names in the world of salsa. They have trained with five-time World Salsa Champion Oliver Pineda of Australia, Salsa On2 pioneer Eddie Torres of New York, Griselle Ponce of New Jersey, The Cobo Brothers of North Carolina, World Champions Karen Forcano and Ricardo Vega of Chile and many more. FANNY OLAYA was born and raised in Lima, Peru where she grew up listening and dancing to the sounds of salsa, merengue, cumbia, cha cha cha, Afro-Peruvian and other latin styles. These sounds were a part of Fannys everyday life from a very early age and have created in her an undying passion for music and dance. CALVIN RICE was born in Buffalo, NY and holds a Bachelors degree in music performance and education from Ithaca College. He is an active musician, dancer and teacher who loves to share his knowledge and talent with others. Classes with Baila Salsa are a mix of footwork (shines) and partnerwork (turn patterns), with emphasis on the techniques of leading and following for the social dancer.
