Bomba courses with Janet Garcia and her Pura Bomba team are 6 weeks, 1 class per week, 1.5 hours each class. $85 per course. Course starting date is August 6 at 2:30 pm Bomba is Puerto Rican drumming, singing and dancing used as a form of expression, identity and history. Stemming from the late 1700s with both African and Taina roots, Bomba is an ancestral "fabric of identity" in the Puerto Rican culture. Bomba is uniquely a "call and response" improvisational interplay between the "Primo drummer" (main drummer) and the dancer. Opposite of what most dancers are used to, the musician, and thus the music, follows the dancer: the drummer will strike the drum ("respond") according to the dancer's steps and body movement ("call"). While the drummers known as "Buleador(es)" carry the basic rhythm throughout the song, the dancer and Primo drummer work together to create alternate rhythm. The "Batey" is a circle created by all where you can shed the stresses and struggles of everyday life, to tell your story through song and dance while enjoying the creative relationship between the dancers, percussionists, and singers.
