La Plena is the traditional dance of Puerto Rico. Borinquen Dance Theatre honors it's roots and history by closing out all of its major dance programs with the Plena. It is also the most often requested dance by audiences all over New York State.
Borinquen Dance Theatre was founded by Nydia Padilla-Rodríguez in 1981 as a community dance and exercise program. Today it is one of Upstate New York’s longest running non-profit dance companies, incorporating disciplined based high-impact youth development principles. The group has entertained and performed for audiences throughout New York State to include: the Governors inaugural, the New York State Fair, the Jacob K. Javits Center in NYC, hundreds of university and college events, festivals, Galas, and private special events. Additionally, BDT has performed at Whirlpool Corporation in Michigan, the University of Kentucky, the Hispanic World’s Fair in Toronto and San Diego International Fringe Festival. Nydia Padilla-Rodríguez and Borinquen Dance Theatre have also received numerous recognitions and awards.
