(1877- 1927) We begin our series with one of the first revolutionaries, Isadora Duncan, who described her style by emphasizing, "Nature is the source of the dance. The movement of the waves, of winds, of the earth is ever in the same lasting harmony." This fun and free style moves us into a BONUS workshop for those interested in connecting in a different way: Contact Improv! This bonus hour-long workshop will explore weight-sharing, tensegrity holds, partnering and "surfing", ending in an original, structured improv dance piece created by US! Jan 14: Meet Martha! (1894–1991) For many Martha Graham's dramatic style is synonymous with Modern Dance. This technique will challenge your core, as we focus on contraction and release, opposition, shift of weight and spirals, and powerful breathwork. Jan 28: Meet Jose! (1908-1972) Jose Limon sought to humanize modern dance, bringing elegence to seemingly pedestrian movements. His theories of fall and recovery with an emphasis on breath and weight, is considered a crucial component of the modern dance lexicon. Feb 4: Meet Merce! (1919 - 2009) Merce Cunningham pioneered a new kind of avant garde modern dance, frequently collaborating with artists and musician to create dancing performance art. Cunningham produced choreography using chance operations, believing that the randomness of our universe is indeed the art of it. In this final class, we will create our own "Chance Dance" following his artistic lead. Emily grew up dancing since the age of 4 in Boston, MA, a cultural hub for performing arts of all kinds.
